Ferkins fly past Southern Cross

20 Jul 2009 14:35 BST

Without doubt the closest race during the Indian Ocean Rowing Race has been between the two remaining pairs boats ‘Southern Cross’ and ‘Flying Ferkins’.  Since starting the race over 92 days ago the two teams have traded positions and despite James and Jamie onboard ‘Southern Cross’ establishing a lead of 100nm, Guy and Andy onboard ‘Flying Ferkins’ are once again out in front.

Despite being less than 50nm apart the teams experienced very different conditions yesterday resulting in the ‘Flying Ferkins’ catapulting past ‘Southern Cross’ who endured a frustrating 24 hours while the current took them on a merry-go-round route.

Finally free of the wearisome current ‘Southern Cross’ now have to play catch-up and make good the lost miles, and with less than 600nm to the finish the race is still firmly on.
