Aud Eamus sets off from Geraldton

28 Apr 2009 20:42 BST

At 0000GMT (0700 local time) on Tuesday 28 April, Aud Eamus and it's eight man crew set off from Geraldton, Australia, nine days after the rest of the fleet competing in the Indian Ocean Rowing Race 2009.

The multi-national crew of eight consisting of two women and six men has a wealth of skill and experience.  Three of the eight crew members have already successfully rowed other oceans including Angela Madsen (Atlantic 2007), Ian Couch (Atlantic 2007) and Woodvale's own Simon Chalk (Atlantic 1997, Indian 2003 and Atlantic 2007).

Racing out of class, Aud Eamus are rowing the Indian Ocean with the sole purpose of crossing the 3,100nm route in the quickest possible time.  They are aiming for a speed crossing of as little as 40 days, finishing in Mauritius in early June.

By leaving later than the other crews they anticipate catching up with the rest of the fleet over the next two weeks. Early reports back from Aud Eamus on the first day of their crossing show their boat speed as an impressive 3 knots, giving the crew a good start to their speed attempt.

Check the progress page to follow the progress of Aud Eamus and the rest of the crews competing in the Indian Ocean Rowing Race 2009.
