Boat 2 ’Dream it Do it’ – Roger Haines injury update:

23 Apr 2009 00:04 BST

Following the retirement and recovery of Boat 2 'Dream it Do it’ to the Abrolhos Islands Roger and Tom were flown to Geraldton so that Roger could seek medical examination and assistance from Geraldton Hospital. Examination confirmed the original on-board diagnosis that Roger had indeed cracked a couple of ribs.  Here follows an extract from the ‘Dream it Do it’ blog of their account following Rogers accident:

I must express my/our sincere thanks to all of those involved in our recovery from the sea: Tom Lee - For being the right man to have on board both for support & getting down to the business end of the recovery, I can't thank you enough.

The Woodvale Team - Truly an exceptional, very professional execution of the well thought through crisis operations plan. It was fantastic to hear the voice of Tony, the duty manager, as he orchestrated the recovery in a very calm & efficient manner. Leslie, thanks for your advice on pain management during the ordeal, Simon for your reassuring words & Nikki for keeping me company at the Airport whilst waiting to go to the Hospital.

The Abrolhos Island Cray Fishermen & Families - We thought that the reception & friendliness that we found in Geraldton could not be surpassed, we were wrong. The Abrolhos islanders were simply amazing. To Mike Davidson on the fishing recovery boat 'Pretty Woman' & I'm not sure who else was on-board, we're indebted for your help & to John Desmond (Goldview Pty Ltd) the owner of the boat. Tremendous seamanship brought them directly to us, so much so at one stage we thought they might hit us amid ships as we could see them but they could not see us until we put up a flare at their request. The delivery of the tow line was expertly executed & we were towed back to the North Island as carefully as possible given the conditions. We were treated to the most friendliest welcome possible by the families & visitors to the island, anyone would have thought that we had arrived in Mauritius! We were instantly provided with drinks & taken back to one of their houses for a cup of tea where we were able to shower. At first I just wanted to get off to the hospital but having smelt our clothes since we've been back I can understand why we got the offer of a shower. There were so many others involved in coordinating help throughout the trip back & unfortunately I didn't get all the names but I'll find out in due course. A huge thanks to each & everyone of you. During the tow arrangement were made for the aircraft coming to pick us up to stop off first at Rat Island to pick up the nurse, Diane, who came to the house to check me out before the flight back to Geraldton. Diane you're a gem & so very kind, I even forgive you for finding the tender spots during the examination. It was a great comfort to have you accompany me back to Geraldton & I'm only sorry that you missed your flight back to the island that evening. The Abrolhos Islanders are in very good hands having you there.

Geraldton Hospital Staff - Again so friendly, helpful & professional in checking me out & even liaising with my sister in Tasmania before my arrival & throughout the day to reassure her that I was alright. I'm due to head off back there next to have an MRI scan to assess the extent of my injuries but there's not a lot that can be done to treat them as such, time will be the healer & there won't be any long-term effects.

DiDi - I'm even closer to this boat now than ever before. We're told that we were in up to 6m swells & she rode the waves so comfortably. There was not one minute when I felt unsafe on her. Obviously there were the rouge waves that smacked us, soaked us & eventually dumped me twice onto the gunwales & Tom on his arse that finally resulted in our retirement & at a later date I'll post the full details when I have more time.”
