Race Retirements - Press Release
Sadly, within a period of 36 hours from race start, 2 boats have retired from the Indian Ocean Rowing Race.
Throughout Monday 20th April, the progress of boat 8 had been monitored, and in consideration with the forecast wind strength and direction there was concern for the safety of Hoppipolla. The Support Vessel was directed to Hoppipolla’s position and at 09:00GMT (17:00 WA time) Mick Moran, requested assistance. Mick had been experiencing problems with his steering system and centre board and had been finding it impossible to row in the desired direction. The Support Vessel took Hoppipolla under tow and returned to the Batavia Marina at approximately 02:45GMT (10.45 WA time) after a tough night of lumpy and unpleasant conditions.
At 15:15GMT (23:15 WA time) the Duty Officer received a call from Boat 2 informing that Roger Haines had suffered an injury, thought to be broken ribs. Consequently Dream It Do It requested assistance and conceded that they would be unable to continue in the race. With assistance from Duck in the Radio Room of the Fisherman’s Co-Operative, a fishing vessel from North Island (approximately 13 nm west of Dream It Do It) was contacted and asked to render assistance. At approximately 01:00GMT (09:00 WA time) Dream It Do It was taken under tow by the vessel Pretty Woman, owned by John Desmond and skippered by Mike Davidson. At 05:10GMT (13:10 WA time) Roger Haines & Tom Lee arrived at North Island. A light aircraft, chartered from Geraldton Air Charter was waiting ready to fly Roger and Tom back to Geraldton so that Roger could receive medical attention. - more to follow shortly.
